Although we have just had only the second weekend of the Australian season already extensive skiing terrain is open, with more to come this week as the weather reports point to more cold weather and wonderful snow in the main ski areas. With cold temperatures and snowfalls leading into opening weekend the season had a fantastic opening across the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, with all five major alpine resorts Perisher, Thredbo, Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Hotham cranking up the lifts and offering skiing and snowboarding on a good cover of snow. In terms of skier numbers, it was the biggest opening weekend since the bumper 2000 season.
A bumper season in Australia is long overdue after six successive winters of below-average peak natural snow depths. Of course, snow-depth comparisons with years past tell only part of the story. Australia’s alpine resorts have invested in building and developing world-class automated snow-making systems capable of making it look like winter even when it’s not.
Last weekend snow-makers got to work early as a result of the coldest May in southeastern Australia since 1970, the snow depth on Perisher’s Front Valley hit 50cm in places.Thredbo opened the High Noon Supertrail top to bottom, while Mt Buller cranked up the Wombat chairlift for skiing on Little Buller Spur and Wombat for the first time on the opening day of the season. Hotham and Falls Creek both opened key lifts as skiers welcomed in the season.
