Zurich is an upmarket banking city and financial powerhouse with a liveability ranking that outstrips almost anywhere globally. Zürich’s sights, eye-watering pricey shops and effortlessly cool nightspots are in the Altstadt, a historic centre cut in two by the Limmat River, which flows off the lake. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town) on either side of the Limmat River reflect its pre-medieval history. Waterfront promenades like the Limmatquai follow the river toward the 17th-century Rathaus. There is plenty of international artists as well, as the most extensive Edvard Munch collection outside Scandinavia and assorted works by van Gogh, Monet, Marc Chagall, Picasso and Max Beckmann, and many other famous artists.
