TripAdvisor has announced the winners of its 2015 Travellers’ Choice awards for Islands, with two Australian islands making it into the top ten in the South Pacific category.
The awards acknowledge over 100 islands across the world and are based on millions of online reviews posted on the TripAdvisor website.
Providenciales, part of Turks and Caicos Islands, was recognised as the top Travellers’ Choice Island in the world category, followed by Maui, Hawaii and Roatan, Honduras.
TripAdvisor chief marketing officer Barbara Messing said the travel website’s community helps to uncover these islands and help other travellers book their holidays.
“Our well-travelled community has uncovered the best islands around the world for that perfect island escape whether you want to lie on the beach or seek adventure,” Ms Messing said.
“To help travellers book their trips to these remarkable destinations, TripAdvisor has surfaced amazing island hotels to accommodate a range of travel budgets.”
In the South Pacific category, Australia’s Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island made the top ten list, coming in eighth and tenth place respectively. Lord Howe Island board representative Penny Holloway said she is delighted to see the island receive the award.
“Our visitor numbers have been trending upwards over the last few years and we are continuing to see travellers leaving the island very satisfied with the experience they have had, and posting positive reviews on TripAdvisor,” Ms Holloway said.
Bora Bora, French Polynesia was awarded first place in the South Pacific category, followed by Aitutaki, Cook Islands in second.
Award winners were determined through a calculation of the quantity and quality of TripAdvisor reviews and ratings of hotels, restaurants and other attractions on islands across the globe.
