Itinerary

Day 01 — THE GHAN EXPEDITION, KATHERINE
Your adventure begins with a welcome drink and light refreshments before a photo opportunity beside The Ghan’s famous red locomotive. Once on board, settle into your cabin or enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Outback Explorer Lounge. As the train heads south, savour a chef-prepared lunch before your Off Train Experience in Katherine.

Choose how you’d like to discover this remarkable region: cruise between the soaring sandstone cliffs of Nitmiluk Gorge and learn about its deep cultural importance, visit the Katherine Outback Experience for an authentic look at life in the bush, or explore the Cutta Cutta Caves with their striking limestone formations and rich Indigenous history. For a more elevated view, upgrade to a scenic helicopter flight over the sweeping expanse of Nitmiluk.

Day 02 — THE GHAN EXPEDITION, ALICE SPRINGS
Wake to the vast, open desert as you approach the legendary town of Alice Springs. After breakfast, set out on your choice of Off Train Experiences.

Ride across the red dirt on an off-road e-bike tour, join the A Town Called Alice tour to discover key landmarks, or immerse yourself in culture on a guided walk through Standley Chasm and Simpsons Gap. The towering rock faces, glowing red in the sunlight, hold profound spiritual meaning for the Arrernte people. Wildlife enthusiasts can visit Alice Springs Desert Park, while adventurers may choose to upgrade to a scenic flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

As evening descends, take part in the signature experience of The Ghan Expedition: a spectacular outdoor dinner under the stars at the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station. With superb food, crisp white tablecloths, and live entertainment, it’s an unforgettable night in the desert.

Day 03 — THE GHAN EXPEDITION, COOBER PEDY
Today you’ll explore the extraordinary town of Coober Pedy, where life in the desert has led many to live underground. Famous as the world’s opal capital, this unique outpost reveals its charm both above and below the surface.

Start the day with a sunrise stop in Manguri before travelling on to Coober Pedy for a full day of discovery. Highlights include a gourmet underground lunch — a dining experience unlike any other. Off Train Experiences allow you to visit the dramatic Breakaways, explore quirky local attractions, or delve into the history of opal mining through the Opal Experience. For a breathtaking perspective, you can upgrade to a scenic flight over the Painted Hills and Lake Eyre.

Return to the train for your final evening, enjoy dinner in the dining carriage, and share a last nightcap in the lounge as The Ghan continues towards Adelaide.

Day 04 — THE GHAN EXPEDITION, ADELAIDE
This morning brings a dramatic shift in scenery as the ochre desert transitions into the lush green landscapes of South Australia. Enjoy a relaxed brunch on board while travelling through the picturesque Flinders Ranges before arriving in Adelaide.

As you step off the train, you’ll leave with more than just memories of incredible landscapes — you’ll carry the stories, friendships, and sense of wonder that come from journeying through the heart of Australia.
