Itinerary
Day 1: Board The Ghan in Adelaide
Board The Ghan in Adelaide and embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of inland Australia. As the train travels north toward the Flinders Ranges, watch the landscape transform from lush pastoral fields to the striking red hues of the outback — a vivid introduction to the country’s dramatic interior.
Enjoy your first gourmet, chef-prepared lunch on board, featuring seasonal ingredients and regional flavours. Spend the afternoon settling into the rhythm of rail travel and connecting with fellow passengers. As evening sets in, dinner is served — another exquisite meal complemented by a selection of Australian wines, beers, and non-alcoholic beverages.
Day 2: THE GHAN, ALICE SPRINGS
After your first night enjoying The Ghan’s exceptional dining and relaxed comfort, wake to a breathtaking outback sunrise at Marla — a remote settlement located about 160 kilometres from the Northern Territory border and the gateway to the Oodnadatta Track. Step onto the red earth, warmed by a crackling bonfire, and take a moment to absorb the stillness and raw beauty of this isolated part of Australia.
Back on board, brunch is served as the train continues its journey through striking desert landscapes en route to Alice Springs. Here, a range of Off Train Experiences awaits, offering something for every interest. Choose from an off-road mountain biking adventure across ochre-red terrain, a guided Alice Explorer tour of the town’s key landmarks, a cultural experience at Standley Chasm, wildlife encounters at the Desert Park, or the natural wonder of Simpson’s Gap. For a truly unique perspective, optional helicopter flights are available as an upgrade.
You’ll return to the train by late afternoon with time to unwind before another gourmet dinner is served. (B, L, D)
Day 3: THE GHAN, KATHERINE AND DARWIN
Wake in the tropical north as the scenery shifts to rocky gorges and canyon streams. Enjoy a cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge, with insightful commentary on its cultural significance to the Jawoyn people. For a different view, upgrade to a scenic helicopter flight.
Alternatively, choose the Katherine Outback Experience for a hands-on look at life on a remote cattle station.
After your chosen adventure, reboard The Ghan and continue to Darwin, where your journey concludes. (B, L)
