Itinerary

Day 01 — BOARD THE GHAN IN ADELAIDE
Your journey on The Ghan begins this afternoon as you step aboard in Adelaide and ease into the relaxing rhythm of rail travel. Settle into your cabin and watch the countryside unfold as the train heads north, offering a taste of the adventure to come.

By early evening, you’ll arrive at Long Plains, where you’ll disembark and transfer to a renowned South Australian wine region. Here, a memorable dinner awaits, highlighting outstanding local produce and exceptional regional wines. As the sun sets across the vineyards, raise a glass to the discoveries ahead.

After dinner, return to the train and settle in for the night as The Ghan continues its journey through the outback.

Day 02 — THE GHAN AND FLINDERS RANGES
Awake to shifting South Australian scenery as The Ghan rolls into Port Augusta, the gateway to the outback. After breakfast, step off the train for a day immersed in one of Australia’s most extraordinary regions: the Flinders Ranges.

Your Off Train Experience leads you deep into this ancient landscape of rugged mountains, dramatic gorges, and striking red rock formations—land shaped over millions of years. From panoramic lookouts to wildlife encounters, the Flinders Ranges provide a spectacular introduction to the heart of the outback.

After a day of adventure, reboard the train for a relaxed evening, reflecting on the wonders you’ve seen.

Day 03 — THE GHAN, MARLA AND ALICE SPRINGS
After a night of gourmet dining and restful comfort, wake early to witness a breathtaking outback sunrise at Marla, a remote settlement near the Northern Territory border and gateway to the iconic Oodnadatta Track. With warm firelight cutting through the cool air, soak up the quiet beauty of this desert landscape.

Back aboard, enjoy a leisurely brunch as you travel north toward Alice Springs. Here, a range of Off Train Experiences awaits. Choose an off-road e-bike ride over ochre desert terrain, explore local landmarks on the A Town Called Alice tour, or embrace an authentic cultural experience at Standley Chasm. Nature lovers may visit the Desert Park or stand in awe of Simpsons Gap. For a truly elevated view, upgrade to a helicopter flight to appreciate the vastness of Central Australia from above.

Return to the train in the late afternoon, with time to unwind before dinner and another memorable night on board.

Day 04 — THE GHAN, KATHERINE AND DARWIN
Your final day begins in the tropical north, where rugged escarpments and flowing waterways mark your arrival in the Top End. Here, you’ll experience one of the region’s most remarkable natural treasures: a cruise through the dramatic Nitmiluk Gorge. As you glide along the river, your guide will share stories of its profound cultural significance to the Jawoyn people.

Alternatively, immerse yourself in the life of those who call the outback home at the Katherine Outback Experience, or explore the ancient limestone chambers of the Cutta Cutta Caves, home to native wildlife and rich cultural history. For a spectacular aerial perspective, you may upgrade to a helicopter flight over Nitmiluk.

After your chosen experience, return to the train for the final stretch to Darwin, where your remarkable journey through the heart of Australia comes to an end.
