Day 1 (MADRID – ALMAGRO – VALDEPEÑAS – BAILÉN – UBEDA )
Depart Madrid heading south towards the Plains of La Mancha. Brief stop in Almagro, once the stronghold of the Order of the Knights of Calatrava. Continue the journey to Valdepeñas, a prosperous wine producing region and further south travel through Despeñaperros Mountain Pass to enter Andalucia. Travelling via Bailén we arrive in Ubeda. Accommodation at the beautiful Parador of Ubeda, a 16th century palace.
Day 2 (GUADALUPE – TRUJILLO – MERIDA )
Buffet breakfast. Enjoy a drive through typical landscape of the region. Free time in the quaint town of Trujillo (home of Pizarro). Continue to Merida for a tour of the impressive Roman ruins, museum and the amphitheater. Overnight in the delightful Parador, a former convent.
Day 3 (MERIDA – ALCUESCAR – MONTANCHEZ – CACERES )
Buffet breakfast. Departure to Alcuescar to visit the Visigothic Basilica of Santa Maria del Trampal, then to Montanchez with free time to visit the castle and admire the locally made mantillas. Continue to Caceres. Afternoon free. Accommodations at the restored palace Parador in the heart of the old quarter.
Day 4 (CACERES – CORIA – GALISTEO – PLASENCIA )
Buffet breakfast. Departure to Coria to visit the cathedral and old quarter. Continue to Galisteo, a walled town before continuing to Plasencia, the site of a great cathedral and the Museum of Textiles. Accommodation at the impressive ancient Parador.
Day 5 (PLASENCIA – GARGANTA LA OLLA – CUACOS DE YUSTE – VALVERDE DE LA VERA – MADRID )
Buffet breakfast. Departure to Garganta La Olla, a typical mountain town. Continue to Cuacos de Yuste where you will have free time to visit the monastery where Emperor Charles V spent his last days. On to Valverde de la Vera, where typical local pimiento factories are located. Continue to Madrid and drop off your hire car.
