Subject to weather conditions there are myriad opportunities outside of Reykjavik of seeing this incredible phenomenon. Not only do the Northern Lights create great drama but so too the country’s incredible landscapes. On this journey you’ll see the highlights of Iceland’s southwest with its dramatic fjords, mountains, volcanoes, geysers and waterfalls and stay in intimate boutique properties which range from log cabin style lodge to sophisticated Art Deco city hotel and more. Itinerary
Day One
Arrive Reykjavik
Arrive into the Icelandic capital where you are met and transferred to your hotel. This evening meet your local host and fellow travellers for a welcome dinner at Grillmarket where the produce comes from local farmers and the dishes are created using smoke, fire and coal.

Day Two
Reykjavik
This morning explore on foot the country’s compact and stylish capital. A city tour is included visiting the 19th century Parliament House, Reykjavik Cathedral, the impressive steel and glass framed Harpa concert hall and the whimsical Hallgrimskirkja church which towers over the city. During the tour a private visit to a local art gallery is arranged and a meeting with the artist. The afternoon and evening is at leisure to explore on your own or relax at the hotel.

Day Three
Reykjavik – Husafell
This morning we head north to Hvalfjordur (whale fjord), the biggest in southwest Iceland, and Borgarfjordur where spectacular waterfalls including Glymur, Iceland’s highest, hot springs and a glacier are today’s highlights. Tonight enjoy dinner at your scenically located hotel.

Day Four
Husafell – Thingvellir National Park – Hella
This morning visit Iceland’s second largest glacier, Langjokull, and hike inside it via a manmade ice tunnel. Continue to Thingvellir National Park crossing the Kaldidalur Valley on the way. The World Heritage listed Thingvellir National Park is a geological phenomenon as well as having the oldest existing parliament in the world which first assembled there in 930 AD. Later today arrive at your hotel on Iceland’s south shore with the Atlantic Ocean on the right and mountains on the left. Tonight is an authentic Icelandic dinner.

Day Five
Golden Circle
Today is a tour of the Golden Circle, Iceland’s main attraction, with its incredible stunning landscapes, powerful geysers and extraordinary waterfalls including Gulfoss, Iceland‘s most famous which plummets 32m down to the canyon below. Lunch today is in the greenhouse of Fridheimar farm surrounded by the fresh produce – tomatoes of all varieties are a speciality and the focus of your meal.

Day Six
South Shore – Hofn
The south shore of Iceland is well known for its scenic beauty with jaw-dropping waterfalls and black sandy beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. Today’s exploration includes the extraordinary 60m high Seljalandsfoss waterfall which flows from the famous glacier of Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Next stop the basalt sea stacks of Reynisdrangar, the black sand beach of Reynisfjara and Skogarfoss waterfall which is counted amongst Iceland‘s most beautiful. Continue along the south coast to Hofn and your accommodation which is located next to the largest glacier in Europe.

Day Seven
Hofn
Today you will admire the huge Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon with its floating icebergs.
This is Iceland’s deepest lake at over 248m. Wander down to the beach where small icebergs wash up on to the shore. Continue east all the way to Hofn and Stokksnes, a replica of a Viking village built for a movie that was never made. Keep an eye out for seals on the beach before visiting the crystal ice caves which are formed when the glacial rivers retract and the water freezes. Each year new caves are formed and the caves are ever changing making each visit unique.

Day Eight
Skaftafell and Vastnajokull National Park – Hella
Today our exploration takes us to Skaftafell where the scenery is dramatic. Marvel
at the jagged mountains and the glacier-topped peak of Hvannadalshnjukur which at over 2,000m is Iceland’s highest elevation. Enjoy a short hike to the Svinafellsjokull glacier and see the longest bridge in Iceland which crosses the river Skeidara. The bridge has been damaged from time to time because of floods caused by the melting glaciers.

Day Nine
Blue Lagoon – Reykjavik
On the return to Reykjavik we’ll drive along the south shore to the magical Blue Lagoon. The mineral-rich waters here are said to have wonderful healing qualities. After time relaxing in the lagoon head back to the city with time at leisure to further explore, shop, visit a local coffee house or relax at the hotel. This evening a farewell dinner is included at Sjavargrillid where you’ll enjoy inventive Icelandic fare at its best.

Day Ten
Depart Reykjavik
Transfer to the airport for departure flight.
