Wide panoramas of wooded savanna stretch in every direction in the park, which is nurtured by the permanent Tarangire River and populated by abundant big game, such as lions, elephants and buffalo. Its dusty red landscape also hosts a large bird population. Tonight, dine in camp.

Day 5

Tarangire National Park | Into the Wild.

Today, embark on morning and afternoon game drives, seated six to a vehicle so that every guest enjoys a window seat. Explore Tarangire National Park backdropped by the spectacular, rust-hued Great Rift Valley. At Tarangire, find a stunning concentration of animals — herds of elephants, impalas and zebras. Look, too, for pythons and the twitching tails of leopards, who hide high above in sausage trees. As dusk falls, you may opt for a night safari, available at an additional cost, to search for nocturnal animals rarely seen by visitors. You may spy an African wildcat, the elusive leopard or the round eyes of a bushbaby. With specialized lighting, look for lions and hyenas and smaller creatures — spotted genets, servals, bat-eared foxes and nightjars. While at Swala, you also partake in a Chef’s Table experience, including a cooking demonstration of local dishes such as ugali, makande and kachumbari, followed by an opportunity to taste them.

Sanctuary Swala, Tarangire

Sanctuary Swala is to be found in a remote valley within Tarangire National Park. The camp offers private game viewing, wilderness indulgence and a privileged glimpse of an Africa undisturbed by mass tourism. Culture is interspersed with extraordinary sights and sounds, comfort mixed with the excitement of the chase on morning and evening expeditions. The friendly and relaxed pace is the ideal backdrop to a thoroughly enjoyable safari holiday.

Large family herds of elephants and concentrations of lions and even the occasional leopard – along with wonderfully prolific birdlife – congregate around a nearby waterhole to create a sensation of majesty and purity. Being unaccustomed to vehicles, the game is unusually “wild”. Accomplished hosts and safari guides enhance your stay with their own personalised African affability, professionalism and knowledge. The low volume of visitors to the park offers a truly unique and private experience.

Each tent has en suite bathrooms with showers are complemented by fixtures and fittings including dressing tables crafted from local materials, designed to mirror the understated refinement of classic safari style. Private balconies with cosy furnishings overlook the bush and the river basin. This allows you to gaze at your leisure on resident wildlife including waterbuck and impala, after which the camp is named. Intimate meals are hosted in the comfortable dining tent, with full silver service, Pan-African cuisine and fine wines adding to the rustic charm.

Gibb’s Farm, Karatu Tanzania

A working farm located within the Ngorongoro Conservation area. With a warm and friendly atmosphere it has charmed and rested many a weary safari traveller for over 40 years. The old farmhouse which is the central point of the farm, was originally built 1929 and now houses the living room, reading room, dining room, bar and a curio shop. A path leads from the main house through the lush gardens to the 18 cottages. Walk through the neighbouring village of Tloma to give you an insight to Tanzanian village life.

Gibb’s Farm shares a border with Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Just inside the conservation area, a majestic waterfall beckons travelers to enjoy a light hike through the forest highlands. Along the way, experience the ‘elephant caves’: cave-like structures created by elephants digging up the earth to ingest the vitamin-rich soil. This soil also attracts other large animals like Buffalo, Bushbuck, Waterbuck, and Baboons. Currently, Gibb’s Farm is home to over 220 different species of birds, and avid birders are encouraged to contribute new sightings to the bird list.
