Bangkok to Singapore | 3 nights
Bangkok
The Eastern & Oriental Express departs Bangkok early evening. Enjoy a welcome onboard the gleaming carriages and settle into your comfortable compartment. Dinner is served as the train travels from city into countryside with its rice-fields, villages and water buffalo passing by. Retire to your compartment, transformed into a cosy bedroom by your steward.
Wang Po & River Kwai
Awake early as the train makes its way from Wang Po along the wooden trestle viaduct beside a towering cliff. Arrive at the River Kwai Bridge station and disembark for a tour with you guide. Take a short walk down to the jetty to board a local raft for a cruise along the lush, green, picturesque Kwai Yai River. On board, a local historian provides a brief overview of the history of the Thailand-Burma railway and the bridge. See other historic sites including the North Temple, Chinese Cemetery and Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. As you explore the informative museum, the historian is available to answer questions. Also perhaps visit the Don Rak War Cemetery adjacent to the museum.
Rejoin the coach for the short ride to the Kanchanaburi railway station to board the Eastern & Oriental Express. Later reflect on the day's sights over dinner and relax with a drink in the Bar Car before retiring for the night.
Penang
After breakfast, served in the comfort of your compartment, the train arrives into Butterworth. Travel across to Georgetown, capital of Penang, on the local ferry. Stop at the Kho Kongsi clan house for a tour of the main hall and temple built in the baroque style of the late Ch’ng dynasty. This is followed by a trishaw ride through the interesting districts, passing colourful shop houses, elaborately-roofed temples, famous colonial landmarks and churches. Stop at the charming “E&O Hotel” for a typical Malaysian lunch.
Take the ferry back to Butterworth and rejoin the Eastern & Oriental Express. Spend the afternoon watching the passing scenery from one of the lounge cars or from the open deck of the Observation Car. Dine again in one of the opulent dining cars and then spend a relaxing evening in the Bar Car with its resident pianist. Spend your last night on board.
Singapore
After breakfast, depart the train, having crossed the Straits of Johor into Singapore.
Bangkok to Vientiane Return | 3 nights
Bangkok
Depart Bangkok in the afternoon. Relax in one of the bar cars, saloon car or in the privacy of your comfortable compartment. Afternoon tea is served as you travel into Northeastern Thailand. Later enjoy dinner in one of the beautiful restaurant cars. Retire to your compartment, transformed into a cosy bedroom by your steward.
Hin Dat, Khao Yai
After breakfast, the train arrives at Hin Dat. Disembark for a tour to Phimai, a World Heritage Site and one of the most important Khmer monuments in Thailand. Return to the E&O for lunch as you continue your journey to Khao Yai. Visit local vineyards and have the opportunity to taste wines, namely, “New Latitude Wines”. Reboard the train in the early evening in time to prepare for dinner. Overnight on board.
Nong Khai, Vientiane
The E&O arrives in Nong Khai after breakfast. A coach transfers you to Vientiane across the Mekong via the Friendship Bridge. Special arrangements have been made to clear Lao Immigration. Enjoy a full day tour of Vientiane including lunch at a local hotel. Capital of Laos, Vientiane is a city of contrasts where French colonial architecture sits alongside gilded Asian temples. Return to the train by coach and depart Nong Khai late afternoon. Exchange stories of the day’s discoveries with fellow guests over your final dinner. Overnight on board.
Bangkok
Breakfast is served in your compartment before the train arrives back in Bangkok.
Singapore to Bangkok | 2 nights
Singapore
The Eastern & Oriental Express departs Singapore’s Keppel Road station in the morning. Enjoy a welcome onboard the gleaming carriages and settle into your compartment. Enjoy the passing scenery as the train crosses to Malaysia via the causeway of the Straits of Johor. Lunch is served in one of the opulent dining cars. Dress for dinner and then spend a relaxing evening in the Bar Car in the company of the resident pianist. During the evening, the Eastern & Oriental Express pauses at Kuala Lumpur’s magnificent Moorish-style station. Disembark for a stroll. Retire to your compartment which has been transformed into a cosy bedroom.
Penang
Breakfast is taken in your compartment before arriving in Butterworth. Travel across to Georgetown, capital of Penang, on the local ferry. Proceed to Chulia Street Wet Market for a walking tour through the street-side stalls selling vegetables, fruits and other local food items. Take a ride on a trishaw along interesting districts passing colourful shop houses, elaborately-roofed temples, churches, the charming Eastern & Orient Hotel and other famous colonial landmarks. Re-board the waiting coaches for the short ferry ride back to Butterworth and the Eastern & Oriental Express for lunch. As the train crosses into Thailand spend the afternoon watching the changing scenery from the open deck of the Observation Car or relax in the comfort of the Saloon Car. Dinner is served in the sumptuous dining car.
Kanchanaburi & Bangkok
After breakfast the Eastern & Oriental Express arrives at the River Kwai Bridge station where the train stops. A guide escorts you on a short walk to board a local craft for a cruise along the lush, green, picturesque Kwai Yai River. On board, a local historian provides a brief overview of the history of the Thailand-Burma railway and the bridge. At the Eastern & Oriental Express landing point board a motor coach for a brief trip past the North Temple and Chinese Cemetery to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. As you explore the informative museum, the historian is available to answer questions. Perhaps visit the Don Rak War Cemetery adjacent to the museum.
Rejoin the coach for the transfer to Kanchanaburi railway station from where your Eastern & Oriental Express journey continues with lunch. Arrive into Bangkok in the afternoon.
Thai Explorer: Bangkok to Chiang Mai Return
Bangkok
Depart Bangkok in the afternoon. Relax in one of the bar cars, saloon car or in the privacy of your comfortable compartment. Afternoon tea is served as you travel into Northern Thailand. In the evening enjoy dinner in one of the beautiful restaurant cars. Retire to your compartment, transformed into a cosy bedroom by your steward.
Chiang Mai
After breakfast in your compartment the train arrives in Chiang Mai where you disembark for a full day’s excursion. Choose from a variety of experiences: city tour, elephant camp and ride, handicraft workshops or exploring the many boutiques. Lunch is included off the train. Return to the train for an afternoon departure and tea served in your cabin. Swap stories of your day’s experiences with fellow guests over dinner and perhaps a drink in the bar car. Overnight on board.
Si Satchanalai & Lampang
Breakfast in your compartment before the train arrives in Sawankhaloke. Travel to Si Satchanalai, part of the northernmost citadel of the ancient Khmer empire and later one of the principal centres of the kingdom of Sukhothai. Explore the impressive 13th century Buddhist temples within this UNESCO World Heritage Site, including Wat Chang Lom “Temple Surrounded by Elephants”. Return to the train at Sila At for lunch while you continue your journey through Thailand.
Mid afternoon disembark at Lampang for a horse-drawn carriage ride to Baan Sao Nok “the house of many pillars”. Enjoy tea as you tour the house which is built in traditional Lanna Thai style and supported on 116 teak pillars. Return to the E&O to prepare for dinner on board and overnight.
Bangkok
Arrive in Bangkok after breakfast where you disembark.
