Explore Japan in 2016

Day 1: Kyoto – Kanazawa

A morning train trip to the castle town of Kanazawa (approx 2 hours). In the 17th century this beautifully preserved old town was one of Japan’s wealthiest areas, as well as a thriving centre for culture and the arts. On arrival at the station you are transferred to the hotel before a half-day tour of the city including Higashi Chayagai old town to explore its numerous artisan boutiques and traditional tea shops. You will also visit Shima, an old-style geisha house and shop for Kanazawa’s famous lacquerware and pottery.

Day 2: Kanazawa

This morning visit the impressive Kenroku-en Garden. Ranked one of the top three in Japan, it is breathtaking in any season. Afterwards visit the imposing Kanazawa Castle and wander through the nearby Omicho market, famous for its fresh seafood and fine sushi. After lunch, head to Morihachi, an artisan shop to try your hand at making the traditional Japanese sweets used in tea ceremonies. Finally, make your way across town to the old Samurai district for a stroll through the Nomura House, the restored residence of a high ranked samurai family.

Day 3: Kanazawa – Shirakawa-go – Takayama

This morning visit the 21st century Museum of Contemporary Art, known for its progressive architecture and ever-changing exhibits. Later, travel by private car to Shirakawa-go, a traditional village in the mountains, famous for its World Heritage listed gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Afterwards travel to Takayama and your ryokan.

Day 4: Takayama

Previously inaccessible, the remote and beautifully preserved old town of Takayama has developed its own unique culture. Take a step back in time as you wander through the town’s old streets. Visit Kokubun-ji Temple with its three-storey pagoda, the Takayama Festival Floats Museum and the Shishi Kaikan, where various masks, dolls and other traditional symbols of this old town are kept. In the afternoon visit Takayama Jinya and a local sake brewery for a tasting.

Day 5: Takayama – Tokyo

Rise early this morning to visit the Miyagawa morning market, with stalls selling local crafts and produce. Later you transfer by private car to Toyama station for the bullet train to Tokyo. Transfer to your hotel .

Day 6: Depart Tokyo
