South of the Clouds: YUNNAN PROVINCE
Yunnan, which translates as “south of the clouds," is China’s most diverse province, and offers travelers extreme variation.
Yunnan has an unique array of fascinating ecotourist resources, including year-round snow-capped mountains and glaciers, lakes and hot springs, highland landscape, primitive forests, and tropical rain forests where elephants and monkeys roam. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Meili Snow Mountain,and the Stone Forest as well as many more, are beautiful and spectacular natural scenery with the changing topographies.
In Yunnan live 26 ethnic minority groups which give a rich patina of diversity and color to the Yunnan scene. Last, but not least, they celebrate varied and colorful festivals. The most famous ones include the Torch Festival of Yi Nationality, the March Fair of Bai Nationality, the Water-splashing Festival of Dai Nationality, the Zongge Festival of Jingpo Nationality and the Knife Pole Festival of Lisu Nationality, etc.
