Japan is renowned for its powder snow and with over 14 metres of snow falling annually its no surprise why! It really is a skier and snowboarders delight with consistent powder snowfall all season long and with its mix of traditions and culture, it offers a unique holiday experience.

Hokkaido 

Hokkaido is home to some of Japan’s most popular ski areas. The main gateway of Sapporo is well serviced and easily accessible by coach from resort areas such as Niseko, Rusutsu and Furano. 

Niseko

Niseko is located 2.5 hours from Sapporo is one of the favourite resorts to visit for Australians. The resort is the largest in Hokkaido and is made up of 4 interlinked ski areas. Niseko’s main village of Hirafu offers plenty accommodation options as well as lots of restaurants, bars and shops. 

Furano

Located in the centre of Hokkaido, Furano is famous for receiving more blue sky powder days than anywhere else in Japan. The resort is made up of two linked zones and offers a great mix of terrain to keep all skiers and boarders happy. As Furano is a town rather than a resort it also offers visitors a great cultural experience.

Rusutsu

Rusutsu is located 1.5 hours away from Sapporo and is made up of three interlinked mountains. It is well known for its tree skiing and also being uncrowded. The base of Rusutsu is unique as it features one large complex which houses accommodation, restaurants, bars, a shopping mall, indoor pool, waterslides, hot springs and a games centre.

Honshu

The main island of Japan is home to many ski resorts all easily accessible from Tokyo. The most popular region is Nagano which was home to the Winter Olympic games in 1998. The area is easily reached from Tokyo via the Shinkansen.

Hakuba

Situated in the heart of the Japanese Alps, the Hakuba Valley is made up of ten different ski resorts which collectively has over 200 runs, it is known as the ski mecca of Japan. As well as incredible skiing and boarding Hakuba has beautiful villages scattered throughout the valley which are rich in culture. Visitors can also easily day trip to visit the Zenkoji Temple and also the snow monkeys at Jigokudani hot springs.

Shiga Kogen

Located in the Johshinsetsu National Park, Shiga Kogen is the largest ski area in Japan, offering 21 interlinked resorts on one ski pass. Shiga Kogen is quite spread out and doesn’t have a large village area so is better for the skiers and boarders that want to ski all day everyday and put their feet up at night and relax in their hotel.

Nozawa Onsen

Nozawa Onsen offers excellent skiing and boarding conditions for visitors whilst still having a very traditional experience. The village has a great sense of tradition with beautiful old street full of history. The village is full of traditional style Ryokans offering traditional Japanese style accommodation
