Off the coast of eastern Africa lies a small collection of sandy islands – remote, but not too remote. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Manda Island is one of many in the Lamu chain. Just 25 rooms are available at The Majlis, offering beamed ceilings, local artifacts, and fine linens all arranged with a modern eye for style. Rooms and suites look out onto the ocean, beach, or pools. Snorkeling, kayaking, and dhow sailing are but a few ways to enjoy the expanse of water stretching out from the island. Deep-water fishing is also plentiful, with marlin, tuna, and king fish clamoring for your line. For those that prefer dry land, the powdery beach should do the trick nicely.
At sunset, take a quick splash in one of two pools before snagging a seat at the Restaurant, where fresh seafood is the main attraction. Salads and wood-fired pizzas are mouth watering in their own right, but when the ocean offers up such bounty, it’s best to accept.
