About Southern Ocean Lodge
What’s New
Optimised views
SOL 2.0 will largely maintain the original lodge footprint with 25 luxurious guest suites easing along the coastline. In a deft design manoeuvre, each of the suites has been reoriented to offer even better views of the ocean and coastal wilderness, where the eye was always drawn to the glorious sunrise, sea mists and thundering cobalt waves breaking on the shore.
New features
A new ultra-premium suite, the 625m2 Ocean Pavilion which follows the ‘owner’s residence’ style pavilions across the Baillie Lodges portfolio, sits remotely offering expansive views of the Southern Ocean, outdoor terrace with wet-edge pool and private accommodation with up to four bedrooms and bathrooms, or a combination of two separate suites.
The Osprey, Remarkable and Flinders suites will be reinstated with upgrades and layout tweaks to make the most of the coastal outlook.
Main lodge enhancements
Near perfect in its original incarnation, the main lodge is comfortingly familiar with the Great Room and suspended feature fireplace at its heart. Enhancements include a private dining ‘snug’ adjoining the walk-in cellar and an edgeless pool curving along the sun terrace. A new location for the Southern Spa allows space for three treatment rooms, gymnasium, a sauna and hot and cold plunge pools with bushland views.
Local loyalties
The rebuild of SOL 2.0 will see the return of the lodge’s original architect Max Pritchard along with his partner Andrew Gunner. The new lodge will once again be a champion of South Australian and KI suppliers of food and beverages, where a commitment to using exclusively local produce is a veritable boon to the regional economy.
Eat and Drink
Dining at Southern Ocean Lodge is both a dynamic delight for the senses and a true gastronomic journey of Kangaroo Island; the ‘produce to plate’ approach is a real passion for Chef Jed Archdeacon and his team.
Celebrated as Australia’s culinary capital, the rich soils and pure rains of South Australia inspire artisan growers to produce a bounty of premium, fresh and often organic food and wines.
The daily changing menu honours these fine local ingredients with a cuisine style at once sophisticated and simple to promote the intense purity of flavours and to create a very special dining experience, unique to the Island and to Southern Ocean Lodge.
An excellent range of diverse Kangaroo Island and South Australian wines and beers has been hand selected to comprise the beverage menu. Rates include all dining and all beverages (cellarmasters list additional).
Spa
The Southern Spa is a private oasis of calm, perched high on a cliff top and commanding dramatic views of the Southern Ocean stretching toward the Antarctic. A destination in its own right, the spa fuses the unique landscape and location of Southern Ocean Lodge with the acclaimed Australian-made Li’Tya range of spa products and professional staff.
A signature spa menu offers a selection of traditional and cutting edge treatments. A steam room, chill out lounge and spa cuisine program will complement an international spa design showcase.
Combined with the crisp Antarctic highly oxygenised air from the pounding surf, the Southern Spa invites guests to immerse in a pure, natural environment that is assured to rejuvenate and relax.
Experience
Southern Ocean Lodge offers guests a complete and personal Kangaroo Island experience. A signature itinerary of selected guided island excursions is designed daily and included in the tariff, allowing guests to encounter abundant wildlife in a ‘zoo without fences’ and discover the Island’s unique natural attractions, often with exclusive access and always with a touch of luxe.
The Southern Ocean Lodge guide introduces sea lions at Seal Bay, guides an exploration of the vast wilderness of Flinders Chase National Park, and leads a journey through coastal flora along the limestone clifftops. A menu of Bespoke Experiences offers further exploration and excellent private charters are also available. Discover epicurean delights, visit local artists, or step off the beaten track to encounter wildlife in Australia’s own Galapagos.
