Grand Hotel Villa Medici, Florence

American writer Mary McCarthy dubbed Florence the “city of stone,” though had she stayed in the leafy garden setting of the Grand Hotel Villa Medici, she may have reconsidered. Especially during the spring and summer, the city’s small centro storico can become overrun with visitors, making the oasis-like hotel, whose grounds boast a swimming pool, a pleasure.

Located near Piazza Santa Maria Novella, the palazzo houses a refined boutique hotel with tasteful 18th century–inspired decor and guest rooms with vistas that would have pleased Lucy Honeychurch (the heroine of E.M. Forster’s A Room with a View). The two restaurants serve traditional Tuscan fare, with more formal dining at Lorenzo de’ Medici and a relaxed setting at the Conservatory, a popular lunch spot, thanks to the garden view.
