Built during the 100 Years War, the Château d’Artigny was a part of the defense system built along the Indre river around the Montbazon Keep. Up until the beginning of the 20th century, the château has welcomed many local personalities.
On July 13, 1912 Joseph Spoturno, known as François Coty, bought the château. He fell in love with the site and ordered the château, which was of a rather “uncommon" style, to be razed, The current château built from 1912 to 1929 in a pure 18th century style. When he died in 1934, the château was put into receivership on the orders of his many creditors.
In 1940, the château was successively occupied by the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of the Navy, and then by German troops until 1942, then by an annex of the Tours General Hospital. It was later used to house inhabitants of the city of Lorient, who fled their city during bombing raids, and was finally used as a hospital again until 1946.
When the perfume maker’s daughter inherited the château in 1947, she received several offers to sell it. It was finally sold in 1959 to Monsieur René Traversac, who bought the château to transform it into a luxury hotel. After more work restoring and fitting out the château, which was decorated by P. Scapula, it opened in September 1961.
The Château d’Artigny has received many important guests such as the Queen Mother of England and the Negus of Ethiopia, in 1963. November 24, 1973 saw the meeting of the “International Monetary Conference" at Artigny, with the Finance Ministers of the world’s five most powerful countries. Famous guests from the world of literature, cinema, politics and the aristocracy, together with the many seminars held here throughout the year, have helped make this little spot in the Touraine countryside famous all around the world.
