2011 Venice Carnival Event Calendar

Carnevale di Venezia (The Venice Carnival) is a world-class event, attracting crowds of visitors from all ovver the world every year. Venice Carnival is steeped in history, charm and tradition: its inhabitants and tourists alike have taken a keen interest in it, thanks to its mix of transgression, art, history and culture in one of the most unique cities in the world.

During the ten days of Carnival leading up to Mardi Gras, Venice is a hive of activity and entertainment, from improvised street entertainment to performances put on by the organisers. The heart of Carnival is Saint Mark’s Square, with its huge stage, although other events take place throughout the city, helping to avoid an excessive build-up of people in pedestrianised Venice.

A central idea is chosen each year that is taken from various cultural or show-biz themes. “Ottocento", the nineteenth century evocation, will outline the Carnival, edition 2011. It will be developed among romantic suggestions and Risorgimento impulses, while wearing its charming redingote and top hats, corsets and crinolines.

* The Serenissima Grand Ball – Palazzo Pesaro Papafava – 9.00 pm.

Gala dinner & entertainment
The Ball will be located in the authentic Venice, in a 14th century Palace, Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, with its precious gothic facade & its elegant quadriform gothic windows overlooking the canal of the Misericordia. The palace will be illuminated entirely with candlelights to create a memorable atmosphere. Based on a novel called La Dame aux camelias (1848) by Alexandre Dumas junior, which caused scandal due to the saucy theme (a story of the love life of Alphonsine Duplessis, one of the most famous Parisian courtesan of the time) and played in contemporary setting, La Traviata is among the most famous operas by Verdi. The authorities at La Fenice Theatre showed tolerance and gave them consent to the performance but insisted that it be set in the 17th century. Thus the unbridled effect of the contemporary chronicle vanished together with a potential attitude of the audience to identify with facts and characters. At its production in Venice at La Fenice Theatre in 1853 La Traviata was a failure; the chief blame for the fiasco appears to have rested with the singers, so much that later Verdi introduced major changes to adapt the parts to new singers. When the opera was brought forward again a year later at San Benedetto Theatre in Venice, the same city which had decried it as a failure acclaimed it a success. While composing the opera, Verdi adopts a new narrative technique, rather unusual for the melodrama of the period. In modern terms it is possible to refer to it as a flashback, or narration of events moving backwards, through the notes of the prelude at the beginning of the opera: a musical portrait of the female protagonist, in a condition of physical decline, while her mind wanders with nostalgia to the past vexed love relationship (it is the passionate solo «Amami, Alfredo» in Act 2) and to the lighthearted days of Parisian frivolity when them passion flared.

– Palazzo Pesaro Papafava – Venice h.9.00 pm

Gala Dinner & Entertainment
The city of Venice has an ancient tradition of familiarity with masks, stronger than in any other city in the world. Masks still play a significant role in the city life; they seem to embody the subtle game between illusion and reality that shapes the mysterious identity of Venice. Arlecchino, the famous character from Bergamo tradition, belongs to the Commedia dellÕArte and is considered the most popular of all its characters. He embodies the soul of the peasant, a primitive na•ve and simple character, often a fool and a dullard. The character appears on stage at the same period that acrobats tour the Italian squares and fairs since the Middle Ages. Tonight Arlecchino introduces a famose magicien to anuse and entertein all the guest with his magical performance and other surprises.
