The historic port of Lyttelton serves as the gateway to Christchurch, the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island. Traditionally considered the most English of New Zealand’s cities, there is much to explore in vibrant Christchurch, from its neo-Gothic stone buildings and beautiful botanical gardens, to its picturesque Avon River lined by graceful willows. Tucked between the majestic Kaikoura Mountains and the glistening Pacific Ocean, this picture-postcard town on New Zealand’s South Island is renowned for marine life encounters, beach walks and diving into plates of crayfish. The town takes its name from the Maori words “kai,” meaning food, and “koura,” meaning crayfish. Bird and whale watching are popular activities. Dolphins and seals frequent its welcoming bay.

DAY 03 – SHIP COVE/QUEEN CHARLOTTE SOUND

Emerald rolling hills are the backdrop for Ship Cove, an unspoiled stretch of beaches and sparkling azure waters tucked within the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Echoing the stunning scenery is Motuara, an island sitting midway between the cove and Queen Charlotte Sound. In 1770 British explorer James Cook visited this area and named it Ship Cove, as commemorated by the Cook monument that sits on its shores. Seabirds, dolphins and fur seals are among possible wildlife sightings in the area.

Stewart Island sits at the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, just south of the Foveaux Strait. This mostly undiscovered eco-tourism gem is home to golden beaches, sparkling bays and lushly forested hills, providing the perfect setting for nature hikes and wildlife sightings. Across from Golden Bay sits Ulva Island, an unspoiled haven for birds — and bird watchers — where colorful parakeets and parrots fly about the forest canopy. Kiwis, wekas, saddlebacks and yellowheads also call this sanctuary home.

In the 18th century, on his second expedition, British navigator James Cook spent several weeks exploring Dusky Sound. It’s one of the largest fjords in New Zealand’s World Heritage-listed Fiordland National Park. A number of large islands lie within its waters, while cascading waterfalls dot its steep, forested cliffs. Dolphins, whales, seals and an array of seabirds, including penguins, are often sighted in this wonderland of nature.

DAY 06-07 – DOUBTFUL SOUND, NEW ZEALAND

A secluded waterway nestled within New Zealand’s World Heritage-listed Fiordland National Park, Doubtful Sound is known as the “Sound of Silence.” Long, winding and steeped in majestic serenity, it’s the perfect setting for unforgettable scenic cruising. At nearly 1,400 feet deep, it is the deepest of the park’s channels. Several impressive waterfalls can be spotted here, along with bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and Fiordland crested penguins.

Situated on New South Wales’ Sapphire Coast, the picturesque Australian town is a gateway to stunning beaches, forested hills, lakes, nature trails and national parks. The sparkling waters of Eden’s Twofold Bay are known as the Humpback Highway owing to the large number of whales that pass through during their migration between Antarctica and the Coral Sea.

DAY 13 – FLINDERS ISLAND, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA

Natural treasures abound at Australia’s Flinders Island. Located in the sparkling clear waters of the Coral Sea, the collection of tiny cays, atolls and lagoons are perfect for snorkeling and diving. During the sea’s low tide, the cays offer a convenient rest stop for a variety of seabirds.

One of the world’s most breathtaking beaches, secluded Wineglass Bay, sits on Freysinet Peninsula on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia. Its azure waters and crescent-shaped, dazzling white sands are fringed by forested granite peaks. The bay is a gateway to beautiful Freycinet National Park. This haven for hikers, swimmers and snorkelers pleases nature lovers with an abundance of varied wildlife, including wallabies, brown falcons, white-bellied sea eagles, and more.

COLES BAY, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA
On the spectacular east coast of Tasmania, nestled snuggly at the base of the pink-granite mountains known as the Hazards, is Coles Bay. Bordering magnificent Freycinet National Park, the bay offers access to an enchanted land of natural wonders. Pristine beaches and bird-filled lagoons beckon to swimmers and hikers. Chance encounters with a wombat or wallaby are among the park’s delights, as are sightings of large yellow-tailed black cockatoos, white-bellied sea eagles, and much more.

MARIA ISLAND, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA
Set within the turquoise waters of the Tasman Sea, Maria Island hosts an idyllic national park and jaw-dropping painted cliffs. The mountainous island, formerly a penal colony, became known as Tasmania’s Noah’s Ark in the 1960s when it welcomed a number of imperiled Australian species needing protection. More than 125 bird species are found here, including emus and endangered swift parrots and forty-spotted pardalotes. Its diverse wildlife also includes bare-nosed wombats, eastern grey kangaroos, red-necked wallabies and ring-tailed possums.

DAY 15 – BRUNY ISLAND, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA

Renowned for its rugged natural beauty, Australia’s Bruny Island is a hot spot for nature lovers and history enthusiasts. The island, essentially two land masses connected by a narrow sandy isthmus, is home to seals, little blue penguins, rare white wallabies and a large colony of the endangered forty-spotted pardalote, one of Australia’s rarest birds. Its Adventure Bay figures prominently in the history of European explorers such as James Cook, Abel Tasman and others who anchored in the bay during the course of their adventures.

Situated between Mount Wellington and the Derwent River, Hobart is recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful harbor cities – as well as an Antarctic gateway.
