Itinerary

Day 1. Arrive in Rome.
Arrive in Rome today (please schedule flights to arrive in Rome by midday) where you are met at the airport and taken for a glimpse of the ‘Eternal City’. Visit the grandiose Colosseum and view the famous Trevi Fountain. After checking into your hotel, enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure to explore on your own. Tonight gather for an informal welcome reception hosted by your APT Tour Director.
Two Night Stay: Rome, Westin Excelsior or similar

Day 2. Rome – Vatican and Castelgandolfo.
This morning visit the Vatican Museum, including Michelangelo’s magnificent Sistine Chapel. Continue with a visit to St Peter’s Basilica before an afternoon at leisure. This evening, tour the Roman Castles area including dinner and wine tasting at a restaurant on Castelgandolfo Lake.

Day 3. Orvieto – Cooking Class – Perugia.
Early this morning travel the short distance to Orvieto, where it’s your choice today: either enjoy a morning cooking class specialising in pasta dishes, including hand-made pasta and various sauces, followed by lunch and an afternoon walking tour of Orvieto. Or, choose to discover Orvieto in the morning, then join an afternoon cooking class featuring ‘Secrets of the Oven’ including pizzas, focacce and breads, followed by dinner. Travel to Perugia for our overnight stay.

Day 4. Perugia – Bologna – Venice.
After breakfast at your deluxe hotel Brufani Palace overlooking the charming town of Perugia, enjoy a guided walking tour. Travel to Bologna for an afternoon city tour including Piazza Maggiore and a visit to Basilica di San Petronio. Continue to Venice and transfer by private boat to your hotel, located on Venice Island, right on the Grand Canal. Tonight enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Two Night Stay: Venice, Westin Europa and Regina.

Day 5. Venice Sightseeing.
This morning discover the treasures of Venice on a guided walking tour. See the famous Bridge of Sighs, then continue to St Mark’s Square and visit St Mark’s Basilica. Visit a glass-blowing factory and witness a display of this intricate art. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 6. Portofino – Santa Margherita Ligure.
After an early breakfast, travel westwards today to the Italian Riviera, and visit the picturesque town of Portofino, perched on a rocky promontory and considered one of the most attractive landscapes in Italy. After lunch, enjoy time at leisure before our short transfer to Santa Margherita Ligure for dinner and our overnight stay.

Day 7. Cinque Terre Excursion.
Enjoy a full day excursion to the Cinque Terre today, five picturesque villages clinging precariously to the steep cliffs. A ‘Cinque Terre Card’ is included in your visit for the train running between the villages. Walk along the Via dell’ Amore, the ‘path of lovers’ overlooking the impressive coastline. Return to Santa Margherita Ligure and enjoy a free evening.

Day 8. Lucca – Florence.
Travel to the quaint town of Lucca today, seen by many as the quintessence of a Tuscan town. A guided walking tour includes a visit to San Michele church and the Duomo San Martino. After free time for lunch, continue to the city of Florence and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Two Night Stay: Florence, Villa Medici.

Day 9. Florence Sightseeing.
Today enjoy a full day guided sightseeing tour of Florence, a treasure trove of architecture and the fine arts. Visit the magnificent Dome and see the Ponte Vecchio and Piazzale Michelangelo offering panoramic views of Florence. After free time for lunch, visit Santa Maria del Carmine and San Marco Church, then enjoy the evening at leisure.

Day 10. Siena – Civitavecchia (Rome) – Embark cruise.
Travel the short distance from Florence to Siena and enjoy a sightseeing tour followed by lunch and winetasting. Continue to the port of Rome, Civitavecchia and embark your luxurious Holland America Line ship ms Westerdam, where your guaranteed ocean-view stateroom awaits. Bid farewell to Italy tonight as your ship sets off into the Western Mediterranean.

Day 11. Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Monaco, home to the royal Grimaldi family, is a principality of fairy-tale beauty. Make sure you peer into the famous Grand Casino and its enchanting Salon Rose. See the palace, the cathedral and the impressive harbour, packed with million-dollar yachts.

Day 12. Livorno, Italy.
If you feel like re-visiting the treasures of Florence, it’s only an hour’s drive from Livorno. Closer yet, in Pisa, see the Leaning Tower, still standing crookedly after 650 years or take an excursion to the Tuscan countryside.

Day 13. At Sea.
Enjoy a full day at sea to relax and perhaps take time to familiarise yourself with your new surroundings. Stroll the teak decks that circle the ship, relax in the many public areas, work out in the ship’s fitness centre, be pampered in the spa or simply enjoy the dramatic view from the comfort of your ocean-view stateroom.

Day 14. Barcelona, Spain.
This morning arrive in Barcelona, a lively mix of Catalan tradition and modern style. Perhaps stroll the Ramblas shopping avenue, visit the famous Gothic Quarter, or admire Gaudi’s unusual architecture and the bizarre works of Picasso.

Day 15. Palma De Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain.
Floating like gems off Spain’s Mediterranean Riviera, the Balearic Islands are famous for pearls, pottery and sublime beaches. Among Palma’s lovely sights are the Gothic-style Bellver Castle, a 13th-century cathedral and the Almudaina Palace, once home to Mallorcan kings. Relax in a street cafe and watch the colourful island life parade past.

Day 16. At Sea.

Day 17. La Goulette, Tunisia.
Arrive today in La Goulette, Tunisia. Tunis, the nearby capital offers a bustling Medina, where close-packed souks offer silver, perfumes, spices, carpets and other treasures. At the edge of the Sahara, the Phoenician city of Carthage now lies in windswept ruins, but once was the glorious rival of Rome.

Day 18. Palermo, Sicily.
Territory of the legendary Godfather, Sicily has hosted many film crews. Traces of Roman, Arab and Norman influences mix here, which is reflected in the eclectic façade of Palermo’s cathedral, speaking volumes about those who came, saw and conquered.

Day 19. Naples, Italy.
Step ashore in Naples and enjoy the varied shore excursions on offer. Maybe visit the ancient city of Pompeii, destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius in AD 79. Or sail across the Bay of Sorrento to the flowery Isle of Capri.
