The tycoon’s American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria in 1810, making the site not only the company’s primary fur trading post in the Northwest, but also the first permanent American settlement west of the Rockies. Other historic figures and facts linked to Astoria include Lewis & Clark, who stayed near present-day Astoria during the winter of 1805-06, and how in 1847, the first post office west of the Rockies was established here.
