2009 Cambodia & Vietnam Explorer – 14 days – Deluxe
Your Journey starts Phnom Penh, ends Hanoi
Days 1–2 ~ Phnom Penh
On arrival in Phnom Penh, transfer to your hotel and meet your tour leader and group for welcome drinks and a tour briefing. While here we explore the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, named for its silver-lined floor, and reflect on the tragedy of the Pol Pot era with a visit to Tuol Sleng. You will also learn about the plight of local street children, and what you can do to help, at the Childsafe Centre.
Hotel: Raffles Hotel Le Royal
Days 3–4 ~ Siem Reap
Fly to Siem Reap, our base for exploring the magnificent temples of Angkor. Admire the incredible stone heads of the Bayon and wander the shady ruins of tree-covered Ta Prohm. Witness the unforgettable sight of Angkor Wat at sunrise via the lesser-visited Eastern entrance, visit ornate Banteay Srei and cruise on Tonle Sap Lake, home to floating villages and one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world.
Hotel: Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor
Days 5–7 ~ Saigon & Mekong Delta
Fly to Saigon, Vietnam’s largest city. Here we stroll along the city’s historic Dong Khoi Street – the former Rue Catinat – and visit sites such as the Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum. We also visit the amazing Cu Chi Tunnels and explore the canals and fruit orchards of the Mekong Delta.
Hotel: Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers
Days 8–9 ~ Hoi An
Fly north to Danang, gateway to charming Hoi An. Here we visit traditional houses and temples and the iconic Japanese Bridge on a walking tour and enjoy a sunset cruise on the peaceful Thu Bon River. For something different, learn about traditional cultivation techniques in the hands-on ‘Hoi An local for a day’ experience.
Hotel: Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort
Days 10–11 ~ Hue
Visit the sacred Marble Mountain and interesting Cham Museum before driving through spectacular coastal scenery to Hue. Explore the city’s historic sites, including the Citadel, elaborate emperors’ tombs and the Thien Mu Pagoda. A fascinating cyclo ride and a cruise along the Perfume River give you a chance to sit back and relax as you observe local life.
Hotel: La Residence Hotel & Spa
Days 12–14 ~ Hanoi & Halong Bay
Fly to Hanoi and travel to Halong City, where we stay the night. A cruise among the thousands of limestone islands of magical Halong Bay will surely be a highlight, as will the delicious seafood we enjoy on board. On return to Hanoi, a cyclo ride through the fascinating Old Quarter and a famous water puppet performance await. Learn all about the life and legend of ‘Uncle Ho’ at his former home and mausoleum, and visit the ancient Temple of Literature and infamous Hanoi Hilton prison. Enjoy some free time before joining your group and tour leader for a farewell meal. Your journey ends with an airport transfer on day 14.
