Vanuatu is a 'Y' shaped archipelago of over 80 islands. It is located about 1,750 kilometers east of Australia. Fiji lies to the east, New Caledonia to the south, and the Solomon Islands to the northwest, all within the area of the South Pacific called Melanesia.
The two largest islands, Espiritu Santo (or Santo) and Malakula, account for nearly one-half of the total land area. They are volcanic, with sharp mountain peaks, plateaus, and lowlands. The larger islands of the remaining half also are volcanic but are overlaid with limestone formations; the smaller ones are coral and limestone. Volcanic activity is common with an ever-present danger of a major eruption, the last of which occurred in 1945. Rainfall averages about 2,360 millimeters (94 in.) per year but can be as high as 4,000 millimeters (160 in.) in the northern islands.
Vanuatu is only a two and a half hour flight from Brisbane and a three and a half hour flight from Sydney by Air Vanuatu. Vanuatu -literally translated meaning 'rising land' – gets its name from a landscape created by a series of earthquakes which formed an archipelago of 83 coral and volcanic islands which lie in the heart of the South Pacific.
Vanuatu is a haven for those looking for a quiet escape without compromising the benefits of modern conveniences. The capital, Port Vila, offers a relaxed life-style, excellent dining facilities, and a wide range of outdoor activities from scuba-diving to various water-sports, jungle river excursions, golf, bush-walking, sailing, outstanding game and sport fishing and much, much more.
While many visitors are happy to spend their time around the picturesque harbour of Port Vila, the more adventurous can fly to one of Vanuatu’s more remote islands, each of which has a unique identity in the South Pacific. On the mysterious island of Tanna, experience the thrill of peering into the active Yasur volcano, discover a lifestyle unchanged for centuries and brush shoulders with the strange cargo cult. Santo, the largest island in the Vanuatu chain sports some of the world's best scuba dives.
The famous wreck of the 'President Coolidge' lies here and can be explored in various degrees of difficulty from novice to expert. At ‘Million Dollar Point’, spectacular marine species abound and cave dives challenge the brave. On land, discover pristine jungles, crystal clear blue holes and the stunning Champagne Beach. On the island of Pentecost, in April and May, witness the courage of the local tribesmen as they throw themselves from a thirty-five metre high bamboo tower with vines tied to their ankles – vines which are longer than the distance to the ground.
For visitors, Vanuatu's many attractions include secluded beaches, jewel-like islands, gourmet restaurants, excellent diving and snorkelling, a relaxed tropical lifestyle and the rich culture of Melanesia. Port Vila is built around the horseshoe-shaped Vila Bay. It's beautiful harbour, in combination with a faded French atmosphere, make it one of Oceania's most attractive towns.
