Malaysia Airlines is significantly increasing its flight capacity from Sydney and Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur, responding to growing demand from Australian travellers. This exciting expansion comes with a major perk for international passengers: a chance to explore a second Malaysian city—like Penang or Langkawi—for free as part of the airline’s popular Bonus Side Trip program.
More Flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur
Starting from late August, Malaysia Airlines will begin rolling out additional flights, with a full upgrade to three daily services from both Sydney and Melbourne by the end of October 2025.
These routes already operate twice daily, and the new flights will enhance flexibility and convenience for Australian travellers heading to Malaysia.

New Sydney–Kuala Lumpur flight schedule:
- MH250: Departs Sydney at 10:25am, arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 4:00pm
- MH251: Departs Kuala Lumpur at 8:30pm, arrives in Sydney at 5:00am next day
New Melbourne–Kuala Lumpur flight schedule:
- MH146: Departs Melbourne at 9:00am, arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 2:15pm
- MH147: Departs Kuala Lumpur at 8:50pm, arrives in Melbourne at 7:45am next day
All Melbourne flights will soon be operated by the airline’s state-of-the-art Airbus A330neo, featuring modern Business Class suites for a more comfortable and luxurious flying experience. At present, only MH148 and MH149 are operated by the A330-900neo.
Explore More with the Free Bonus Side Trip Program
In addition to more flights, Malaysia Airlines offers international passengers a chance to explore more of Malaysia through its Bonus Side Trip offer. Travellers flying long-haul via Kuala Lumpur can add a free domestic flight to another Malaysian destination, such as:
- Penang – the food capital of Malaysia
- Langkawi – a tropical island paradise
Passengers only need to pay applicable airport taxes—the flight itself is free. It’s the perfect way to discover more of Malaysia at no extra cost.
“It’s almost two cities for the price of one," says Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer at Malaysia Airlines. “This program allows our transit passengers to enjoy the best of Malaysia, even on a stopover."
Brisbane–Kuala Lumpur Flights Resume This November
Further good news for Queensland travellers: Malaysia Airlines will resume its Brisbane–Kuala Lumpur route on 29 November 2025, offering five flights per week and expanding access from across the east coast of Australia.
