Frequently Asked Questions
Travel insurance typically covers a combination of:
Medical emergencies — illness or injury treatment, hospitalisation costs, medical evacuation, repatriation.
Trip cancellation, interruption or delays — if you need to cancel or cut short your trip for covered reasons (e.g. illness, natural disasters, airline insolvency).
Lost, stolen or delayed baggage and personal effects — including coverage for valuable items (subject to sub-limits).
Travel delays and missed connections — some policies cover costs for alternative transport or accommodation if delays exceed a set threshold.
Optional extras such as cruise coverage, rental car excess cover, adventure sports cover if chosen.
As soon as you book any non-refundable trip cost (flights, accommodation, tours etc.). This ensures you’re covered against cancellations, delays or unexpected events from the moment you commit.
Yes — if you travel often, an annual or multi-trip policy can be a cost-efficient option. But note each trip may still be subject to limits on duration or specific terms depending on the destination(s).
Credit-card travel cover may offer some protection, but coverage is often limited (e.g. only flights/one-way, certain countries). Always review your credit-card policy carefully and compare it with a dedicated travel insurance policy — it may not provide comprehensive cover for medical emergencies, baggage or cancellations.
Some insurers allow you to purchase a policy after your trip has already started, but there may be waiting periods or additional restrictions.
It’s always best to buy before leaving Australia to ensure maximum cover.
Yes — travel insurance can still be valuable domestically, covering events like trip cancellations, delays, lost luggage, personal liability and other unexpected incidents (even if medical cover is not needed).
Not always. Some providers exclude pre-existing conditions, or require additional premium or medical screening. Always check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to see what medical conditions are covered.
Coverage depends on your card provider’s terms. Most require a minimum card payment to activate insurance. Check with your provider for details, including exclusions.
With nib, any two traveling companions can buy one policy, there’s no requirement for living in the same address or being ‘a couple’, but travellers must spend over 50% of time traveling together.
To ensure cover for a companion’s screened & approved existing medical condition, a family or due policy would need to be purchased.
Most insurers allow online claim submissions. You will need to gather relevant documents: receipts, medical or police reports, booking confirmation, flight details, baggage tags etc. Follow the insurer’s claims procedure as outlined in the PDS.
The excess is the portion you pay out-of-pocket when making a claim. It applies per claimant per event. Choosing a higher excess can reduce your premiums, but increases what you’ll pay if you claim.
