The largest winter sports event outside of the Winter Olympics, Winter Games NZ attracts competitors from 36 countries and has gained an impressive international profile in its short history. The 2013 competition, which involves 14 days of action between 12Aug13 and 25Aug13, will act as a launch pad to the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Events at the 2013 Winter Games include alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling and snowboard big air, as well as six World Cup events: snowboard halfpipe, snowboard slopestyle, snowboard cross, freestyle ski halfpipe, freestyle ski slopestyle and ski cross. This festival of winter sports will also include off-mountain events, including a film festival.
New Zealand’s South Island provides world-class locations for the Winter Games. Many of the events will be staged on the ski fields near Queenstown and Lake Wanaka, including Cardrona, Snow Park and Snow Farm, and historic Naseby will host the curling events.
Winter in the Queenstown and Lake Wanaka regions is magical. With dramatic, snowy ranges and crystal clear lakes, the area is a photographer’s paradise. Ride the Skyline Gondola in Queenstown for the ultimate picture-postcard shot across the lake and towards The Remarkables mountain range.
The landscape makes it the perfect setting for all kinds of winter and adventure sports, from skiing and snowboarding, to whitewater rafting and jet boating.
Race Viewing
All sporting events are free to watch at the Winter games and no tickets are necessary. You will however need to arrange your own transport up to the ski fields/venues and passes if you wish to ski/snowboard as well as watch the competitions.
Timetables for various events are being finalised and will be confirmed soon, click here for the latest up to date event information.
It is strongly recommended that you check event timetables before attending your desired event as due to the nature of the alpine environment last minute changes to scheduling can be made.
Other Activities
Apart from snow activities, There’re lots to see or do at Queenstown or surrounding areas. For more sedate activities, there are spa treatments available, boutique shopping and sightseeing tours. Or seek out some of the spectacular locations that were used in the Oscar-winning film The Lord of the Rings.
There are also other non-sporting events at the games such as the Downtown Festival. The downtown festival includes the Adventure Film Festival, Cyclocross Championships and Concert. Ticketing and entry information for these events will also be updated onto the event website over the next few weeks as they become available.
